Helpful information about the new Family Law Act from the Ministry of Justice

To help prepare everyone for the new Family Law Act, the Ministry of Justice has added a new page to its website called Family Law Legislation. This new page includes or links to:

  • Information about the changeover from the current Family Relations Act to the new Family Law Act
  • Detailed descriptions of the different parts of the new act
  • A Table of Concordance that lists each section of the new act alongside the related section of the old act (if there is one)
  • A list of frequently asked questions and their answers
  • Highlights of the new act, including:
    • best interests of the child
    • settling disputes out of court
    • addressing family violence
    • time with a child
    • property division
    • determining parentage
  • Other information about how the act was developed.
